Continental Toyota Welcomes New Parts Manager

Did you know?

We have a new member to our fun and exciting team.

We’d like to take this opportunity to give a big, warm welcome to our new Parts Manager, Scott Mickelson. He will now oversee the parts department and ensure that our inventory is fully stocked to meet the needs of your Toyota or Scion.

Is your vehicle in need of a new part? You might work with Scott to find what you need.

He may be a new member to our team, but the automotive industry definitely isn't something new to Scott. In fact, he comes to us with 14 years of experience from none other than our sister store, Continental Mitsubishi. He has been in the car industry for practically his entire life. Trust us, this guy knows what he's talking about.

At home, he has a wife whom he has been married to for 10 years, and is kept busy with their two children whether it’s helping out with homework or attending birthday parties.

He enjoys hanging out in the backyard, swimming in his pool and barbecuing. Also, he’s a big fan of the Miami Dolphins and New York Mets.

Needless to say, we’re excited to have Scott here as part of the Continental Toyota family and hope he’s just as happy to be with us as well.

Looking for parts for your vehicle? Call us today or check out what we have available on our website.

Li’s Corner: There’s a New Comfort Food in Town!

Our Service Valet, Elysian "Li" Shiavitti is always whipping up something delicious. For this week's blog, we're sharing a special recipe from Li's Corner, which you can find in our monthly newsletter.

This month's recipe is for the ever-so-delicious and family favorite Pasty (pronounced "Pass-tee"). I was born in the small town of Ironwood, located just 18 miles from Lake Superior and Canada on the upper peninsula of Michigan. My father worked in an iron ore mines and before he went to work, my Mother would make this delicious treat for his lunch.

My favorite place to buy pasties is Joe's Pasty Shop, but my favorite place to get them is right in my mother's kitchen. Everything she cooks is from memory and far from exact (A little of this, a pinch of that etc.), but my wife and I have begun to record her process. Some of these recipes are just too fantastic not to share, which brings us to this post. But first, I think it would be fun to go through a little bit of history:

The pasty's origin can be traced back to Cornwall, England. Before leaving their homes to work in the tin mines, Cornish workers made a hot pasty. The miners placed this versatile food in their pockets, which provided both warmth and nourishment for the miner. The traditional pasty consisted of meat, potatoes, onions, seasoning (and in some cases turnips). All of which were wrapped in a crust and baked.

Because of the threat of arsenic poisoning, the miners often ate the "body" of the pasty, while discarding the "crimp," or outer edge of the pasty, which they held with their dirty fingers. The miners believed, however, that the pasty crimp was not wasted but instead left to appease "knockers," or ghosts, within the tunnels of the mines.

When the tin mining industry declined, Cornish miners immigrated to other parts of the world for other work. One of these areas was the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and parts of Wisconsin. It was here that Cornish miners worked in the copper and iron ore mines.

Other ethnic groups, including Finns, Italians, and Poles, adapted the pasty recipe to include ingredients that satisfied their tastes. While the recipe may vary among nationalities, it can be agreed upon that the pasty should contain potatoes and onions.

There are many recipes on the Internet but this is my mother's (and I think the best).

Dough:

1 cup shortening (Crisco) or butter

3 cups flour

1 tsp salt

1/2 cup cold water - added as needed

(1 egg slightly beaten for glazing)

Filling:

1 lb ground beef

2 cups potatoes(small cubed) & 1 large onions grated.

1 carrot (small diced) 1/2 cup small cubed rutabaga

Season with salt & pepper to taste

Place the flour, Crisco and salt into a large clean bowl. Rub the Crisco into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, working as quickly as possible to prevent the dough becoming warm. You could also cut shortening into flour with a pastry cutter, add the water to the mixture a little at a time until the dough binds together, add more cold water a teaspoon at a time if the mixture is too dry. Wrap the dough in Saran wrap/Cling film and chill for a minimum of 15 minutes, up to 30 minutes.

NOTE: The dough can also be made in a food processor by mixing the flour, shortening and salt in the bowl of the processor on a pulse setting. When the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, add the water, slowly, through the funnel until the dough comes together in a ball. Wrap in Saran wrap/ Clingfilm and chill as above.

Divide the pastry into 6 and roll each piece into rounds (approx 6 - 7 inches).

Place the filling mixture into a large mixing bowl and mix thoroughly.

Divide the meat mixture between each pasty circle and place in center of the circle. Brush half of the circle edges with a little beaten egg.

Fold the circle in half over the filling so the two edges meet. Seal and crimp the two edges together to create a tight seal. Brush each pasty top with the remaining beaten egg.

Place the pasties on a greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes at 400°, lower to 350° for 30 minutes or until golden brown,

Serve hot or cold with catsup.

Top Five Car Seat Myths Dispelled from Buckle Up for Life

Child Passenger Safety Week took place last moth from September 13-19. Just in time for this event, Toyota and Cincinnati Children's partnered up to create Buckle Up for Life. This nationwide educational program works to keep children safe while in a vehicle. As part of their mission, Buckle Up for Life has released the top five myths about car seats and is giving the true facts behind them.

Myth #1: Used car seats are fine to use

FACT: Car seats have expiration dates

Just like a motorcycle helmet, if a car seat has ever been in an impact situation, it may be compromised and unable to protect a child during a crash. Plastic also breaks down over time. Always check the expiration date on a used car seat and get it from a trusted source that will be honest about its history.

Myth #2: Small children are protected by seat belts alone

FACT: Children under 4' 9” need a booster seat

Children under 4' 9” need to ride in booster seats because seat belts can ride up around their necks or waist, causing injury during a crash.

Myth #3: The more expensive a car seat, the better it is

FACT: All approved car seats are equally safe

Since all car seats must meet NHTSA guidelines, the only factors that make them more expensive are fabric, padding or extra accessories.

Myth #4: Older children may sit in the front seat

FACT: Children under age 13 are safest in the back seat

Just because a child outgrows their booster seat does not men they are safer in the front seat. Back is better under age 13.

Myth #5: One year olds may ride in a forward facing car seat

FACT: Children must face rear until age two

According to studies, children under the age of two are 75 percent less likely to be severely hurt or die in a crash if they are facing rear.

Remember these facts to keep your child safe when you're on the road.

Once Again, the Toyota Camry Was Named Most-American Made Car!

Now, more than ever, Americans are looking for labels that say “Made in the USA”. The American auto industry is a shell of what it once was, with more and more operations going overseas. This is a sore spot with many, especially those who live in a once-thriving city like Detroit. One doesn't associate the name Toyota with America, per say, but in fact they have been investing and growing more and more in the United states. This is why Cars.com has named the Camry number one on their American-Made Index.

About the Cars.com American-Made Index

The way the Index from Cars.com works is that vehicles are rated on being bought and built in the United States. Items taken into consideration are what percentage of parts are considered to be domestic under federal regulations, sales in the US and whether the vehicle has been assembled in the US. If a model has a domestic-part contents rating of under 75 percent, they are disqualified. Models built only outside the US or those about to be discontinued without a successor built in the US are also disqualified.

Why the Camry Ranked #1 American-Made

The Toyota Camry is produced out of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK). TMMK is the biggest manufacturing facility for Toyota in North America. Engines are also built at TMMK and the facility employs more than 7,500 people. Over 10 billion vehicles were manufactured at TMMK as of 2014. The Lexus is about to join the lineup in Kentucky, being the first Lexus manufactured in the US.

Most of the engineering and design of the Camry took place at Calty Design Research Inc. and Toyota Technical Center. Both are located in the United States and have chief engineers that are American. Toyota has a total of 10 manufacturing facilities located in the United States.

If you're looking to support the United States and its hard workers, don't hesitate to buy a Camry.

Chicago Area Toyota Dealers Discuss 20 Years of Innovations By Toyota

Chicago area Toyota is proud to be a part of a brand that has developed many patented technological innovations over the past two decades. More than 20 patents have been given to five Toyota engineers. One of the engineers has more than 29 patents, which is more than and North American Toyota team member. Here are some examples of great innovations by Toyota engineers in the past 20 years.

Combating Slim Jims for Theft

It used to be that thieves had an easy way to break into a car: slim jims. All they had to do was slip it in between the glass and doorframe, pull, and open the door. Carmakers got wise to this and started making countermeasures that would keep crooks bay. The problem was that only some of their solutions worked. They also added to the cost of the vehicle and made manufacturing more complicated. Norm Kerr III, a Toyota engineer, came up with a better idea in 1995. His idea was much cheaper and wold save time on the assembly line. His idea became a symbol of the first patent that was issued to Toyota Technical Center (TTC) engineers.

More Patents for Toyota

20 years later, another engineer for TTC, Nora Arellano, was given the patent for side curtain airbags that were installed in the Toyota Tundra. This idea could shield passengers during different crash scenarios, and was the 1000th patent that Toyota's North American Manufacturing and Engineering headquarters was issued. The brilliance of these engineers was honored at an event at the Toyota Engineering Theater on June 11th, at the Michigan Science Center. Arellano, Kerr and 114 more Toyota researchers engineers were recognized for their innovations and the patents they had earned.

Chicago area Toyota Looks at Influential Women in Auto Industry

Women are power players in the automotive industry. Many consumers automatically picture men when they think about cars, racers, top auto execs, and mechanics, but women are playing with the big boys and making significant strides. Some women started long before the new millennium and paved the way for strong women today. Chicago area Toyota looks at some of influential women in the auto industry.

Toyota Senior Officer: Julie Hamp

Julie Hamp is the company’s first female, non-Japanese senior official. Toyota appointed Hamp in May in an effort to diversify leadership at Toyota, and Hamp has big plans for the company. Hamp started out as the chief communications officer for Toyota. Hamp grew up in Queens, studied at Ferris State University, and started her career at General Motors in communications.

Women in Racing

Women are burning up the racing circuit. From the pavement to the sand, women are flying past the men. Of course we cannot talk about women in racing without first mentioning Shirley Muldowney, the first woman ever to receive a license from the NHRA. Hellé Nice set the world land-speed record for women in 1929. Ashley, Brittany and Courtney Force followed in their famous father’s footsteps.

Women in the Shop

One of the most recognizable women in the shop is Jessi Combs. Combs earned a degree in automotive fabrication from the WyoTech, and she was the first female to place at Ultra4 events. Lately, Combs can be seen on her television show “All Girls Garage” where she joins her all-female cast, Bogi Lateiner and Cristy Lee. Another female face under the hood is Army Spc. Samantha Brumley. She is the first female tank mechanic in the National Guard.

There are many more powerful women in the auto industry. Who is your favorite trendsetter?
